THE FULL STORY
Dr. Natoshia Anderson was a Mechanical Design Engineer. She designed HVAC systems,
piping, plumbing, and fire protection for buildings across the Southeast. She was exactly the kind
of woman STEM programs wanted to point to as proof the system was working.
But she saw what those programs didn't want to talk about. The isolation. The pipeline that
narrowed to a trickle by the time it reached Black girls. The talent that got screened out — not for
lack of skill, but for lack of access, sponsorship, and mirrors.
In 2004, she made a choice that looked like a step back to everyone watching. She walked away
from engineering to teach high school math.
It was the most strategic move of her career.
Twenty years later, Dr. Natoshia has worked the problem from every angle — as a teacher, as a
Dean who wrote and won grants, as a founder who took everything she built inside institutions
and made it available to any organization willing to do the real work.
